Dramatic and Vibrant Oil Pastel

For art enthusiasts and those who simply enjoy coloring, choosing an art medium for your painting and drawing needs can be a bit difficult. There are many colored art mediums to choose from, starting with the very popular crayons to color pencilsblo penswatercolors, and oil pastels. However, if you prefer making your art to have a more dramatic and vibrant final result in surfaces like wood, hardboard, canvas, sanded paper surfaces, and even metal, you might want to choose oil pastels.
Oil pastels are quite similar to wax crayons because they are both made up of pigments held together with a wax binder. The difference between the two art medium is that oil pastels have their binders mixed with non-drying oil that makes the colors to be blended by hand, cloth, and solvents. Oil pastels are relatively a combination of colored chalks and crayons. They are sticks containing powdered pigments that are round or rectangular in shape. Oil pastels have a soft texture that would not produce a dry, dusty, and flaky product.
However, because oil pastels are oily in nature, it quickly sticks to the surface thus making it difficult to clean and remove in case you made a mistake in your drawing. In order to minimize this disadvantage of oil pastels, you must always bring paper towels or a cleaning cloth along with your drawing materials to avoid mess in your drawings, hands, and work area surroundings. You also need to sketch by using sketch pens your drawing outlines first before coloring so that you will now have an idea to where you should color. In working with oil pastels, the colors are mixed directly in the surface and not in the palette so proper blending techniques are of importance here.
Oil pastels do not dry when exposed to air but they harden with time. To help the colors stay in place in your work of art and avoid further smudging, a fixative spray is used. Fixatives allows the colors to dry in place, however, too much use of fixatives may darken the colors so they must be used in sparing amounts.
Oil pastels are also convenient for because they don’t require a lot of materials for them to work with a drawing with luminous effects. You only need mediums for blending and fixatives to finalize your work but you need to be careful of their toxicity, so choose the ones that are not toxic.  They are also versatile and they work well along with many oil painting materials.
